Self defence: Need input on flash light

So, yes. I'm going to Thailand on Dec 20th. I've been feeling a bit naked without some form of self defense. I was in one situation already that could have ended very badly. Luckily, it ended on a very good note.

Anyway, I cant have anything with more than a 2" blade. Any blade could be taken perhaps by police if they want to give me a hard time. I cant have spray and I obviously cant have a firearm.

So, I'm thinking a flashlight is the way to go. Not a big baseball bat one, however. I'm looking for smallish, hellz bright, good battery life, and durable. Surefire had a few that I saw and like. One has a special bezel on it meant for strikes. That, looks a bit nasty though. I NEED to take this light on a plane so I think I'll need something more mundane looking.

Any ideas? Here's what I was thinking about getting:

I hear a few things that concern me:
1). Surefire has poor battery life compared to other makers
2). Surefire has poor brightness compared to other makers
3). Bezel looks ... violent? might be considered a weapon. CANT take that risk on a flight.

Any thoughts, ideas, etc. would be great. I want to buy soon.

Maglite's can put a hurtin' on someone, and they're pretty common.

WHich part of Thailand are you going Matt?

I've been to Thailand many times, and it's pretty safe. I even went around in the back of a pickup truck with locals, so yeah.

going to bangkok and some islands. I'm not expecting a problem. I just want to have options in case I get into a problem. Even here, Japan is really safe but I still want an advantage.

Okay as an Officer for TSA I'd recomend you check whatever you take in your checked luggage, pretty much anything is allowed, knives, some strike weapons, even firearms with proper declaration and permits.

If you try carrying that stuff on you are risking getting arrested or getting the item confiscated, this will cause you more trouble than you want. At the very least you can miss your flight.

Think of it like this, if you wouldn't want some one to hit you on the head with it, then it shouldn't be carried on the plane with you.

The flashlight might be your best bet, but I'd still have it checked in with your luggage. Hope that helps a bit, good luck.

i was going to say, i just bought a set of maglites and i swear the full sized one has some freaking weight to it when you load those batteries in there.

then for another 20 bucks you can get the LED upgrade for the lamp that increases light output and batteries life.

ok matt i found a happy medium, 6pdl.

                          http://www.surefire.com/6PDL

paired with the 1" combat rings

                          http://www.surefire.com/CombatRings-CR-KIT01

130 for flashlight, has 11 hour batt time at 80 lumens.

not the best of the best but it will get the job done.

also replacement batteries are 21 dollars for 12

giving you roughly 140 hrs of badass flashlight action for 150ish not a bad deal in my book

Lol that would land him in jail for sure, that would be trying to carry a concealed weapon on to an aircraft.

I believe butterfly knifes and brass knuckles are illegal to have on you anyways.
