Why not just install bootcamp on the Mac and run windows? No need for a new computer then.

Personally, I wouldn't touch Compaq, HP, or Dell with a 10 foot pole. Compaq and HP are crap. Dells seem to be hit and miss, depending how much you pay.

Personally, I prefer MPC, formerly known as Micron. We have been operating them for over 10 years, and still haven't really had a single problem. They can get pricey though.

I currently have a Toshiba laptop that I love, although it is still new. Toshiba has a good rep from what I can find though.

Macs are OK, but IMO for the average user, they can get overpriced very quickly, although they do serve some functions better than PC.

I'm not a fan of Dell. Never have been.

My two best laptops... the only ones I use... are both Acer. I just picked up an Acer Aspire One netbook. It's a full laptop at half the size. The only thing it doesn't have is a CD drive (too small for one). I absolutely LOVE it. It's the most convenient thing to transport. If your mom gets one of those, it could fit in her purse. No lie.
my friend had an Acer Aspire One less than 48hrs b4 the HDD went out. and they sent a new one, and the screen was DOA on arrival.

MSI Wind is a much better unit if we're talking about netbooks.

Im sure others will chime in.

Macs get a bad rap, but they are durable flexible computers. My fiance has had one for months now and hasnt had 1 problem. She leaves it on, runs mulltiple tabs and programs etc and it runs smooth. I have also not heard about a lot of repairs with macs. But i dont own one so thats where my expertise ends.

Hps are great fucking pcs....my friends have had them, my mom, sis, and sister in law have 3 hp laptops that work flawlessy. Ive always found Hp to be of good standings.

              Gateway not so much.

How the fuck do you put Sony at the top of that list? No. never.

IBM is outstanding, always has been as far as i can remember.

              Toshiba is pretty good.

              To the OP-

I don't know what programs your trying to run, but if you want portability id look into the new Acer Aspire ones....very lightweight and they come with either Xp or a lightweight Linux.
What exactly is wrong with you? Your insults are uncalled for and no one will "chime in" on your baseless opinion.

I'm quoting RESEARCH done by a company that uses the same standards on ALL their laptop tests. I don't care you don't like their results but it doesn't matter because they use scientific methods as opposed to opinions. And according to their methods, macs ARE more breakage prone and sony is less breakage prone. And HP's are among the WORST as far as repairs needed.

Here is an image of their charts that you may reference and proves my previous statements. My personal experience with pc's and laptops mirrors their findings.

the lower the number the better the pc (fewer repairs)

pick up one of their magazines or join the website to see more of their findings if you like.

i gave her this link. i saw it on lastnight before i went to sleep. it comes with a ton of extras. the key pad was a very big plus with my mom. she said she really liked it.

nothing too flashy, nothing over-the-top expensive. just a basic computer to do her things on. the ton of extras and the key pad are what got me to show it to her though. plus, i can get need for speed for myself.

Honestly, all those ratings are well within an acceptable margin of error. I wouldn't trust that.

Macs are just as durable as any other computer. It's all in how you treat them.

i never said anything about macs being durable...the problem with my mom is it isn't a windows.

personally, i like macs just fine. my mother on the other hand, a different story. shes fed up with her mac becuase it isn't like the windows shes used to using. it was easy for her, and that's what she wants.

thanks for all the input guys.

I guess i'll never understand how people cant use Macs when they're used to windows. The basic idea is identical.

I've always had problems with gateways, but I've only dealt with desktops.

Our compaq is ok, just ok

ibm's seem to be wonderful, I've only worked with an old one but it was solid.

                        dell's, I hear, are great

toshiba's are supposed to be pretty good, I've had to work on quite a few of them but only because so many people buy them, and everytime I've worked on one it was something simple, easily fixed.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

I am sorry if i offended you by coming on a little strong. I don't see where i insulted you tho?

Either way i could post some results to counter that but it all really depends on who you talk to.

I never cared much for results like that(ie KBB) because these things are intended to be guides and not true for every situation.

From all my personal experience(which includes friends ive had along the way that work extensively with computers) your list would actually be the opposite of what ive seen, where as Sony has had the most problems, namely the Vaio line.

In either case this arguing doesn't help anything anyway, everyone has different experiences and like Eric said a lot comes with how you treat them.

I know a lot of people who don't maintain their computers whatsoever and have problems(Defrag, scans, cleaning etc).

And then ive seen people not take care of their computers and have no problems, especially with Macs.

                            x2.

My only experience with macs was 6,7, 8th grade. This is like mid 90's so i dont even know what version it was.

Most of my time on computers was with 95, ME, 2000, and Xp.

Now that my fiance has a macbook i can pick it up and use it and pretty much figure out anything i need too.

Its all relatively the same, except for some minor differences.

Then again i had a crash course in Linux so that might have made it easy to adapt.
