I always resented the fact that he didn't give a damn about research till he got paralyzed... Still, I guess it's better to do SOMETHING regardless of the reson, rather than sitting and doing absolutely nothing.
What exactly was it that killed him? I know he was supposedly recovering from his paralysis much more than anyone thought possible.

True you can say you resent the fact he didn't do anything, but in the same how did he know that he was going to be paralyzed later in life, know what I mean. For example if you get famous and you just say get Lou Gehrig's disease (just an example, I knew someone who died from it), isn't that going to be one of the last things from your mind until a doctor says that you have.
While I do understand where you're coming from, you also have to consider that angle to. I mean maybe he didn't support anything, maybe he was selfish with his time/money earlier in life, but how would he know.
I mean you can donate to charities and things like that, but until it affects you I can't see anyone picking something so specialized, and the same if you had the means to maybe make yourself better, wouuldnt' you do it too?
I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just trying to give a counterpoint to your statement. Because I can definitely see where you're coming from, and I know a lot of people think the same, for example people say that about Michael J. Fox and Parkinson's.
But anyways, its still sad to hear, especially since he was doing so well as far as coming along.
I understand. It's not that I think his work to cure himself (and others like him) was wrong... It's just sad that people only care when it touches their lives. He was a yuppie riding a horse, without a care in the world, until he got bucked and lost everything.
I've had "activist" friends, and I've grown to be critical about people's reasons for any causes they are involved in. There are VERY few people who get involved with helping people simply because it is the right thing to do. Everyone has their own personal interests (even me )
Still, regardless of his reasons, he really did contribute a good deal to research. For that he is to be commended and remembered fondly.
I read this last night on yahoo news, a feeling of sadness came over me. I don't know really why though, it's not like I knew him or anything. However, what struck me was being a child and watching superman and wondering, wow, those are some tight leggings.
