Obtain a copy of "Nero Vision Express", not just regular Nero.

(though I believe you may need the regular Nero installed for the process)

a 500mb AVI file will be MUCH larger when "uncompressed" and burned using Nero Vision Express.

Think of AVI like mp3. When you "uncompress" an mp3 to wav, it's much larger.
AVI is to VOB (dvd files), as mp3 is to wav.

Open Nero Vision Express, add the video file(s) you want on the disc, hit next (using mostly defaults) and make sure you have a DVD+/-R(W) in the drive!

It will automatically "uncompress" the avi file and make it into VOB files, and create a generic DVD menu structure.

Be aware, converting form AVI to a DVD is a very time consuming process. Expect a 700mb movie file to take at least 2 1/2 hours to process and burn.

ps... there is no such thing as a "dvd cd". you can always burn Video-CD or SVCD, but the quality sucks compared to DVD.
