    Why do children shriek?

    Seriously.

I'm trying to do my paperwork, and the neighborhood children (4-8ish) are just squealing their heads off. I don't get it. I didn't scream as a child. Sure, I would laugh, shout to my friends, and enjoy myself... but the stuff these kids are doing, I swear... they'd put heavy metal singers out of a job. The kicker is that I look outside, and they aren't even doing anything. Not running around, not really playing... just kinda standing there screaming. This is a common thing, too.

I'm getting a cold. I'm gonna go out and sneeze on every single one of them. That should give me a few days of peace and quiet...

I think the level of shrieking is inversely proportional to the IQ of the parents. They simply haven't been taught not to. None of my 4 kids shriek, although the four year old girl can, occasionally, shatter fine crystal when the mood hits her. I saw a child (girl, about 8ish) the other day walking around in our complex, just screaming. She wasn't in pain, angry, hysterical, scared or in trouble. She was just screaming. I watched her stop, talk to another child, and then pick right up where she left off.I was going to ask her to stop, but she was outside a vacant apartment where one of my guys was working, so I let her be to liven up his afternoon!

I watched Nickelodeon. I never shrieked. I STILL watch Nickelodeon... and still, no shrieking.

A shriek of joy is one thing...

This shrieking is just like what visualpoet described... just glass-shattering wailing.

And yeah, I'm sure it has everything to do with the parents. It's also probably a personality type thing as well. I'm pretty reserved as far as personality goes. In person, I'm pretty quiet (I talk a mile a minute... but not loudly, and I rarely aggressively enter conversations)

Dean, at least we know your little girl will behave! She's bound to stay in line with the possibility of making Big Dean mad!

Wait until you hear one tell you "Move mother fucker, go on now." 3 times as you drive by his eleven year old ass standing in the middle of the street. and then look you in the eye and tell you he didn't say it. And when I took him up to his mother, he called her a bitch and said I was a lying ass mother fucker! lol

I miss the days when you could slap the taste out of a neighbor child.

Me and my cousins were known to be quiet as a mouse when in public. If we did make noise, we wouldn't get beaten right away, but we'd get the look. The look was basically "You can scream and misbehave now but when we get home, ima' beat your ass chinese."

My dad never once hit me. My mom would smack my ass from time to time. I hated when my mom hit me... I was scared shitless of my dad ever hitting me If 5'3 mom stung, 6'4 dad would hurt like hell! The look worked wonders on me.

Shrieking for survival is one thing... shrieking just to make noise is irritating as hell.

Thankfully, they've stopped Back to work!
