How do you make videos to put on Youtube?

I currently use the damn Windows Movie Maker or whatever it's called but I wonder if there's anything better?

I can't really do what I want to do, and when I put music in the video, I can't find a way to turn the volume down on it so you can hear what's going on in the video clip.

I keep having to use Cool Edit Pro to adjust the volume and such....but maybe this is the only way?

I don't do a lot of videos and not going to spend $550 for that shit. But as you said there are ways to get it free. Like just about all of my programs
