Well, considering they weigh less than 2,000lbs, and an 8,000HP airplane would probably weigh at least 16,000 lbs, it would still be fun. I was thinking last night about a way to do both...

How about we make a deal. When eric becomes a racecar driver he'll take you around the track in a really fast car and you can take me for a ride in a really fast airplane.

Flying on AIRLINERS is much safer than driving a car. Flying a small airplane, especially with students who don't know what they are doing, is actually much LESS safe than driving a car.

Airlines are safe because the pilots are already trained, competent, and have a TON of experience. The airplanes are safer because everything is designed to be "fail safe" and redundant. They fly out of the weather, and they always have Air Traffic Control trying to keep them safe.

We fly airplanes with one engine, that are made to be as light as possible, we can't fly above the weather, and we have students that while not purposely trying to inflict bodily harm to you, do it anyway. Landing, or flying right near the airport is the riskiest part. On landing you have very little time to fix anything that they do wrong, and you don't always know when they are going to do it. We also have a VERY high occurrance of near mid air collisons in the traffic pattern. I believe last year alone our school had something on the order of 700 right around the airport. I can get the actual data if you want it. With as much as we are trained, and as much as we do our best to keep things from happening, there are still many incidents where airplanes are damaged or broken. Then sometimes the problem is caused by a failure on the airplane itself.

Racing cars isn't "safe", but it might be just as safe as the type of flying I do, and they make a hell of a lot more money. And racecars are maximized toward safety in a crash. And airplane certainly isn't.

LOL! But I will tell you what. If I get the chance to race a car, I will, and I will STILL take you both on a really fast airplane ride.

I will hold you to that. I would really like to do that on my honeymoon, along with a couple of racing schools.

I didn't realize that you were an instructor. Honestly i thought you had your 'small planes' pilots license and were working towards becoming a 'big plane' pilot license. And its true... if something goes wrong in a race there is still a pretty good chance of the driver walking away. When something goes wrong hundreds of feet in the air there's no real chance of walking away.

LOL! I actually have the second highest pilot's license you can get. That would the be the Flight Instructor. The only one I don't have is the ATP or Air Transport Pilot license. That license essentially would allow me to be the Captain on a big airplane, whereas the commercial license I have now, only allows me to work as First Officer on a big airplane. I will get the ATP soon enough, but it requires a certain amount of specific experience to get it, and the study guide alone is 1500 pages. I truthfully could have moved to the airlines had I wanted to, but right now the industry sucks, and I like what I do, even though I would like more money. I decided about 6 months ago to stay where I am because I could see the layoffs coming.
