85 - 87 CRX Si if you can find one that isn't rusted out. My dad has an 87 and it gets 40 on average, and he even got 53 mpg on a trip south once! And its still fun and peppy. Some of them even came with factory LSD. They weigh in at about 1500 lbs, the next gen gained about 200 pounds over it. Parts are hard to find for them tho, we couldn't buy body parts anywhere. The plastic front fenders are specific to the Si, as are the doors, rocker moldings, and bumpers. So keep that in mind.

A Rukus...??
x108 on something late 80s/early 90s. Especially Honda or Toyota.
Those older escorts can get mileage, but it wont be as good as a CRX or the like.
Id almost think that any older civic or CRX would get good mileage. As long as the previous owner(s) took care of it and it has decent miles.
And i dunno about a Rukus, but a bike might not be a bad idea....

I don't care if it's a dog... But I drive for a living, doing paperwork in the car and stuff... so a bike isn't very practical. Plus, 1000 miles a week on a bike... I'd get killed!
I forgot about the VX. That's an option... I really hate Civics, but they're not bad for economy and reliability. The CRX is one of the only Civic-based cars I really like!

the eighty's escorts were actually really bad, they had timing chain(or belt, i cant remember, im pretty sure it was chain) problems that froze the whole motor. or something like that my dad was telling me about...
