Kids need to learn to stand up for themselves. I'm sorry... but if 8 people were beating on me, there's no way in hell I'd let it go on for 30 minutes. I may not be able to take all 8, but screw it... they're already hitting me... I'm hitting back!

I was in a situation where 5-7 guys jumped me. Twice.
The first time, I was sitting outside playing guitar. They surrounded me, and the moment I realized I wasn't going to talk my way out of things, I simply found the fastest way out. They got my stuff (which I later recovered... damaged), but I only got hit a few times. I didn't sit there and let them do it... I'd have fought back if I hadn't been hit from behind, and tied to my guitar...

The second time, I was at a party. I was on the balcony with my friend, and before I knew it, I was on the bottom of a dogpile, getting pummeled. I blocked the best I could, and just took it. As soon as it let up and everyone started to go back inside, I went straight for the biggest guy. Everyone else just backed off

The only thing different from what happened there and what happens EVERYWHERE (this wasn't all that uncommon in my area... not as common with girls, though) was that this was videotaped and put on the internet.
