Why not just register a JDM as a custom car

Allow a replica vehicle to be assigned the same model year designation as the production vehicle it most closely resembles.

I assume you could easily get a jdm car to fit into this category

Well what are the standards on custom cars in the US?

Remember a big part of the headache in registering imported cars in the US is the DOT regs on glass and airbags etc.

That could be a loophole but im pretty sure it would still be a headache and a half.

Im eager to hear some responses on that.

You would put it under the category of like a hot rod... Hand built car... They don't have the same standards. You take off the JDM vin if it has one and you get one from the state

So for cutom cars like hot rods, they dont have certain regs they have to follow according to the DOT.

Just asking cuz ive never built a hot rod and registered it lol.

Some of them aren't street legal i know that lol.

Hmmm i guess if they don't require the car to be looked over before they hand you a VIN plate then i guess it would be all good.

They might think its suspicious that your replicating a car you could just buy lol...i mean you cant just go out and buy a 1939 Ford(well you can but not without a nice check)

Yea ive read that in some form on other sites before.

Thats basically the brunt of it.

You can't just bring a car here and label it something and expect it to be legal. The US is very stringent on the guidlines surrounding importing and exporting.

The only way ive seen it done, is illegal and you always run the risk of getting it confiscated.

It's not worth it imo.

if the car has to be 25+ years old, then just wait another 7 years...

I waited 12 years to get a settlement from when i got hit by a car in the 1st grade. I think i can wait another 7 years to import a RHD Cb...that shit would be sweet as hell tho.

While the idea of importing a pristine Hakosuka or KenMari Skyline from the 70's sounds awesome, the reality is that these cars are harder to find in good condition. Even if you COULD locate one, they're likely to command a premium price (due to their own regulations old cars in Japan are costly to retain and register), and parts for your rare Skyline will be next to impossible to source in the US and are even difficult in Japen. Windshields for 1969-1972 Skylines aren't exactly common.

Finding 25 year old cars is not the easiest thing to do in Japan.
