Ever had a wheel come off on you?

I just did. Which sux because I scored a good set of 15" 5 star double spoke alloys with matching new tires for $150 from a truck driver at work. I was driving down the main road from my house when I felt the steering wheel shimmy and POW.. I see the drivers's side wheel go out towards the intersection bouncing and a expedition barely missing it.

Meanwhile my ass is ridin dirty, car bottomed out on driver's side sliding towards the berm , trying to keep from wrecking into it. I was able to get to the edge onto the shoulder with my rotor buried in the dirt. Good thing somebody(another nissan head) stopped and took me back to my house to grab sockets and my scissor's jack that I of course didn't have with me.

So umm..that tire is blown, the rim is scathed on the lip, but not cracked or bent. Oh and my fender was a casualty, but its no biggie. pick and pull has quite a few donor cars. Reason for wheel coming off is prolly cause I ignored the one partially stripped stud and couldn't get lug nut on super tight. Not going back and retorquing the nuts after a week didn't help either. I fail.

Car wheel nuts shouldn't have to be retorqued after a week, otherwise workshops ould be full of cars, just to have the nuts retorqued.
What did you torque them to anyway?
Did it break any of the studs?
Glad to hear you diddn't have a serious accident

thanks man. This is the first. No broken studs, but two are stripped. I torqued them to factory spec. All the other wheels were still tight.I'm just glad I wasn't on the freeway.

Are you talking like rubber off the rim or entire rim/tire came off the axle??

Thats pretty fucked up! Good thing you werent going any faster. My shits on tight, but thats always been a fear of mine.

Driving down the highway and BOOM wheel flies off and the car loses control

                      GL putting it back together.

just wondering, how do you not torque it to spec. I'm like 150 and I push down pretty hard, and also use my body weight, and it hasn't failed on me yet...

i try not to over torque them because changing twisted-off honda studs was never a fun thing for me

I think their not doing it tight enough As you say its pretty hard to do them too tight - though it can be done esp with rattle guns . . .
Seriously though, get a torque wrench - honda spec 80ft/pounds
I normally do them up to 85 at work just for good measure
