The apostrophe signifies a possessive, not a plural!

If the car belongs to Bob, that is a possessive.




As it says in the cartoon, it can also be used for a contraction... "the cat's out of the bag"... The apostrophe signifies the combination of "cat is"... and is therefore used correctly. The same goes for "what's" as used in your sentence... that's correct (as is "that's" )


edit: I misread... josh has it right in the post below. That's a plural possessive.

Use an "S" followed by an apostrophe (s') to show possession of plural nouns or nouns that always end in "s".
