Public Service Announcement
Everyone in the snow belt, please try your best to install some winter tires.
I can't stress how functional and advantageous winter tires are.
I have always driven winters with all season tires, believing the "all-season" claim; no matter how bad the snow, ice, slush...I risked it and I was lucky.
Today, it snowed a lot for the first time this winter so I installed my very first set of winter tires. I did a quick comparison test between the all-seasons and the winters and the difference was night and day.
Review:
The all-season Bridgestone Potenza G009 tires were very slippery; I could barely take off in 1st and had to take off in 2nd several times. Slowing down took a very long time; although I was pedaling the brakes very fast. I would be hopeless in an emergency situation.
The winter Firestone Winterforce tires offered considerable control. These are not performance winter tires, yet they excel. Not only was I able to take off in 1st gear, but stopping distances were reduced by about half; this was at speeds of about 10km/h, if I was going faster, the difference would have been less, but still very significant. The winter tires also offered considerable steering feel, I could feel the tires gripping the road; in comparison, steering my all season tires felt like I was operating a boat.
Once again, I plead with those in the snow belt to please install winter tires; it is a matter of safety IMHO.
