ENG: Diagnose a Check Engine Light and S/D4 errors.

After 19,000 threads about how to do this, I decided there was a need for one of these. I thought there was one.. but I dunno. Motion to sticky ... mods if you wanna change the thread title to "how to .... " that would be kew.. i forgot to add that.

    1. If your check engine light is on, start by going to your passenger side kickpanel.
There should be a blue connector w/2 wires to it like the one pictured below.

Put a paper clip, wire, connector in it to connect the two prongs.

    2. Put the key in the ignition, and turn the key 2 clicks to the acc on, where all the lights light up on the dash.

    3. You will now watch how many times the CEL light blinks.

    a long blink = 10
    a short blink = 1
It will repeat after all the codes are done.

    4. Compare to this list to see what the problem is:

    1 O2A - Oxygen sensor #1
    2 O2B - Oxygen sensor #2
3 MAP - manifold absolute pressure sensor
4 CKP - crank position sensor
5 MAP - manifold absolute pressure sensor

    72 random misfire cylinder 2
    73 random misfire cylinder 3
    74 random misfire cylinder 4
80 Exhaust Gas Recirculation insufficient flow detected

91 Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor low input
92 Evaporative Emission Control System insufficient purge flow

    Resetting ECU

    1. Disconnect Negative battery terminal (never only take off the positive, cuz it can kill the battery when it grounds all the power out, if left for a while)

    2. Look in the Underhood fuse box, find the "Hazard" Fuse. Pull it out.

    3. Let the car sit for 10-15 minutes

    4. Reattach neg battery terminal and put fuse back in

    5. Restart car w/nothing on (radio, lights, a/c) and just let it run for a few minutes.

    6. Turn off, and then it should be good to go.

TCU Error codes are indicated by the "S" light on 90-91 models, and the "D4" light on 92-93 models. The codes can be read in the same way as the ECU codes with the paperclip method by counting the flashes of these lights. DO NOT replace the TCU without first checking the error codes. If the TCU is doing its job, the S/D4 light is indicating a properly reported code, and a new TCU will not fix your problem.
The error codes are as follows:

    0-Transmission control unit (TCU) faulty.
1-Lock-up solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
2-Lock-up solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
3-Throttle Position Sensor circuit open or shorted.
4-Vehicle Speed Sensor open or shorted - No signal from speedometer.
5-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit shorted.
6-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit open.
7-Shift Solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
8-Shift Solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
9-Counter shaft or transmission speed pulse generator open or shorted.
10-Coolant Temperature Sensor open or shorted.
11-Engine RPM (Ignition coil signal) open or shorted.
    12-(No code 12 used)
13-Main shaft speed pulse generator open or shorted.
14-Linear (line pressure control) solenoid open or shorted.
    15-Kick down switch circuit shorted.

    ABS Error codes

I did a Google on ABS codes and all sources online seem to be incomplete. So here it goes, hopefully this is sticky-worthy. Note: the page numbers are as found in the Helms P/N 61SV405.

Also, it appears that these codes are the same for all pre-1998 Honda ABS/ALB systems. *1998+ Honda ABS systems use a different set of codes.

I’m pretty familiar with code 1-0, so I put a little extra info there.

    Code 0-0

Symptom: ABS indicator light does not come on when ignition switch is turned ON

    Probable Cause:

    3. Blown ABS indicator light bulb
    4. Open circuit between ABS indicator light bulb and ABS control unit
    5. Open circuit between ABS control unit and body ground
    6. Poor body ground
    7. Faulty ABS control unit

    Refer to page 19-64

    Diagnosis: ABS pump motor over-run
The ABS indicator light is turned ON when the pump motor relay ON signal is detected for more than 40 seconds while the ABS is not functioning

    Diagnostic Period: Initial & Individual

    Possible Cause:
    1. Air mixed in the ABS brake fluid; look for foamy fluid in reservoir
    2. Pressure Switch stuck OFF; see if the pump comes on and runs until the light comes on without stopping where cause #5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are not present
    3. Open in circuit between the pressure switch and ASBS control unit
    4. Open circuit in the P-SW circuit between the pressure switch and body ground, or a poor ground
    5. Drop in pump discharge volume; look for pools of fluid under modulator
    6. Leaking outlet valve; same as #5
    7. Leaking relief valve; look for reservoir volume to drop and then gradually rise to its original level, triggering the pump to kick back on
    8. ABS brake fluid leakage; same as #5
    9. Faulty ABS control unit; same as #2 or if ABS Indicator Light comes on quicker than 40 seconds

Solutions (each number below corresponds to a Possible Cause above):
    1. Bleed the system with fresh fluid
    2. Remove ABS Modulator, remove back panel, clean bourdon tube switch.
    3. Repair open with solder and shrink wrap
    4. Same as #3
    5. Replace failing seals
    6. Same as #5
    7. Replace the relief valve; good luck, I've got the same problem and have yet to find a good replacement
    8. Same as #5
    9. Replace the ABS control unit with known working unit and see if there is a change in the diagnosis

    Refer to page 19-69

A good idea I got from my buddy was to jump the OBD connector with a switch. I've got a radioshack switch on my dash to check CELs while I'm driving. I get a CEL, flip the switch, and know right away what it is.

Would help.. but I cant say that I throw CEL's enough to justify a switch.. but if it works for someone, kew. Now on my moms 97 civic... I think i might do that. Stupid thing runs fine, but throws codes ALL the time. They are usually "misfire cyl. 1-4"

ok i checked the location on your walkthrough and found a brown plug with 2 wires plugged into it when i have the key on the car makes a dinging sound when the connector is out of place. only thing is that i get no codes. But my check engine light does come on from time to time when im driving in stop and go traffic

another idea that works well is cutting off that blue plug and hooking up a flat black on/off switch in place of it. i mounted it in the kickpanel cover, so to get the CEL i just flip the switch... works nicely.

I had the 'switch idea' a while back too, but the light doesn't come on often enough to really bother and install one. I use the paper clip.
My car has the plug as well. I was wondering if it's the same on all Hondas or just on CB7s?? I think some Hondas have an ECU LED light that flashes a code when check engine light comes on. I could be wrong though... maybe it's wasn't a Honda I've seen that on.

yeah this is really handy, saves for paying someone to 'diagnose' a CEL, good work.

so after it blinks does it show a long blink to show that it is going to redo the code again?
