ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

93 EX has an F22A1 block. How do I check for other differences?

Hey guys, I got my 93 EX back in August of 2016. At the time that I got it, I was mainly concerned with the EX having a more powerful engine, the F22A6. So, by the VIN: 1HGCB7178PA00264, it should have been what I was looking for.

However, after learning more about cars and my car in particular, I noticed this:

Now, the blocks are the same of course for F22's. Notice that it seems to have F22A4 headers as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I noticed some oil caked onto this tube that dips into the coolant reservoir also:

So, it's apparent that they at least swapped out the block due to some previous issues.

My question is, how do I identify what else they have switched out? I plan on doing some modifications and I don't know how to check to see if I have the F22A6 cam and things like that in there. Where should I start looking to check for these things?

What likely happened is that the previous owner, or someone before him, needed to replace the engine for whatever reason. They went to a junkyard or engine source and weren't overly concerned with having the exact engine to replace the F22A6, or just didn't know the difference. The paid someone to install it and they were back on the road. With the price of an entire engine for cars like these vs. the labor cost/effort of just swapping the block alone, I'd say that none of the F22A6 stuff is left.
My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks for the quick response.

It looks like they unfortunately ditched the original F22A6 dual runner intake manifold, that's too bad! They did keep the A6 exhaust manifold and transmission though. If you're curious about the camshaft, thoroughly mark the distributor and remove it. The end of the camshaft will either be stamped 3A (A1,A4 motor) or 4B (A6 motor). I'd bet it's gonna be the 3A cam due to the fact that they didn't carry over the A6 IM. I would also assume that you're still probably running the PT6 ECU too.

Well, the good news is that they kept the 4-2-1 exhaust setup but the bad news is that they didn't keep the A6 intake plenum. With the PT6 ECU the engine probably isn't running correctly since they have different mappings.

The other good piece to this is, if you find a A6 cam and dual runner intake, everything is there to make it work as intended. Might be an opportunity to get a mild cam regrind like a 260.

I bought an engine from a local guy here who had an extra H23 complete intake manifold he was trying to get rid of, would be happy to get you in touch with him if you are interested. The H23 manifold is the same as the stock A6 manifold but has a bigger plenum.

Thanks! I will check on that this weekend. How would I check for the PT6 ECU?

Pull back the carpet on the passenger side. You'll see the ECU mounting plate. Remove that, and look at the label on the ECU. You'll see either PT6 or PT3 on there.

This is exactly how I bought my car back in 2015. 1993 EX with an A4.
It was still running the PT6 when I checked the ECU.
