How do you check for codes?

Exactly as the title says. How would one go upon checking for codes? What tools and devices are needed? Where exactly do you check for the codes. What are the correct procedures? I know this is a newbie question and without a doubt, I'm one of them.

Couldn't of been done without you guys

Towards the bottom...in short just pull the carpet from your passenger side and count the flashes; a long flash is a 10 in the code and a short flash is a single in the code.

For example if it's long flash short flash short flash your code should be 12.

    Then find your code here:

pull off the passenger side kick panel, look for the service connector, it's a plug (blue i think) with two wires. get a paper clip and connect/jump the two wires from the end of the plug. put the key in the ignition and turn it two clicks forward. the Check Engine light should blink.
