    cp[mike] : 1999 Honda CR-V EX

I picked this up during the summer of 2013, to be the new daily driver. I needed something that: 1) is affordable to own and maintain, 2) is familiar and easy to fix, 3) is small enough for mainly a single passenger without being wasteful, 4) is large enough to carry furniture and appliances, 5) has enough interior room and features to facilitate easy camping and road trips, 6) can comfortably fit 4 people including bags and snowboards, 7) is good in bad weather or rough terrain, and 8) can be covered with dirt and salt without making me cringe.

So enter my: 1999 Honda CR-V EX, with 2.0L Realtime AWD.

Nice car. I've debated getting one for myself. I can't say that I would leave the factory engine untouched, though. That platform is just too tempting.

Here's a neat read for your spare time:

4WD or 2WD? What kind of towing capacity does it have? What kind of mileage do you see out of it?

Nice info!! Those sorts of upgrades I would consider, though I need to always be careful about intruding on the reliability aspect. For example, it would be fun to boost it or something....... but NO, save the projects for the coupe........ dammit :P

It's the "Realtime AWD" model, meaning it is usually just front wheel drive, unless it detects slippage then the rear kicks in. I have been able to experiment with it the last time it snowed - while not quite as beastly as the old Toyota 4WD, it confidently held its own, without making me feel like i was driving on thin ice. You can feel, and hear, when the AWD is working. The updated ABS (as compared to the older CB) is nice, too. The weakest factor right now is definitely the old tires.

It doesn't have crazy tow capacity (its a civic...), and quite frankly I would need to look up the numbers. I bought it with the hitch already installed. It is mainly intended for pulling trailers, not towing cars... though I am curious how it would fare, and would maybe attempt it if its a very short distance. I know the hitch is connected to the center tow hook, plus 2 additional spots through the trunk floor bowl. Is there a such thing as a car tow dolley with self-contained brakes on the axle? It would be cool if they did and could be paired up with the vehicle's system to actuate them.

Still trying to get a good MPG reading, but most of my trips are short with inconsistant gas refills. On the highway trip home I think it got mid 20's? It is actually in dire need of a tuneup, so I'm sure it is actually less than that with normal use right now. Still way better than the old toyota, though.

What do you actually need to do to run the larger size tires on these? Lift or do you have enough clearance? I'm curious if anyone actually makes anything for these or if it's just a spacer lift.

They're pretty neat though, I considered one as a commuter at one point.

What Mike needs is a set of 17" CRV steelies with snow tires like I have for my 5 lug conversion

Mine are from a 2009 CRV

Are those bigger tires, or just bigger wheels?

I'm curious what the largest/tallest/widest tire you can stuff under one of those without hitting the body. There's usually some wiggle room relative to stock, but some models don't have that much room in them.

While I was looking, on average out of the 800 active listings, only about 5 were manual... really limits the selection. I actually picked this up in Indiana and drove it home to NY, haha.

I replaced the fuel filter, pulled apart the fuel injectors and replaced the screens and seals, and cleaned up the ports in the manifold. Rebuilt the distributor with new seals and hardware, and installed my extra MSD setup, with the cap, coil, new plugs and wires, and my custom external ignitor circuit. Also did a valve adjustment just to make sure the valvetrain was in spec.

and while i had stuff out, I sprayed every bolt and rustable surface (basically the whole engine bay) with some Fluid Film anti-corrosive spray.

It's now running better than ever, ready for winter!!!

I need to find a can of body-color spray paint, so I can redo the valve cover.

Thanks! It's not perfect, but its perfect as a daily driver that I don't need to care too much about making sure stays perfect. At least, cosmetically. I definitely like the color, its called Supermarine Blue Pearl. Not too common.

so I would say this is a huge improvement:
